Gullickson Eliminated At ITA National Indoors
November 05, 2009 | Women's Tennis
Schnack, who is ranked 11th nationally, posted a 7-6(5),6-2 upset over the second-ranked Gullickson who ends the fall with a 6-3 record. On Thursday, Gullickson went up an early break in the match to take a 4-1 advantage before Schnack recovered and forced a first set tiebreaker. Gullickson had a mini-break for a 2-0 edge in the tiebreaker and Schnack rallied again to go up 6-3. Gullickson saved two set points before the Bruin claimed the first set. In the second set, Gullickson was slowed by knee pain, according to Georgia assistant coach Frank Polito.
“Chelsey started out playing well and then Schnack raised her level of play and took the first set and eventually won the match,” said Polito. “Chelsey wasn’t able to run down a lot of shots in the second set like she normally does.”
Due to the injury, Gullickson will not play in the consolation draw, according to Polito.
Georgia junior Cameron Ellis and senior Naoko Ueshima begin play Friday at the Duals in the Desert event in Palm Springs, Calif. The tournament features singles and doubles draws with student-athletes from schools such as UCLA, USC, Northwestern and Georgia Tech. This is the final event of the fall tournament season for the Bulldogs.
