October 08, 2009 | Women's Tennis

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. --- Georgia sophomore Chelsey Gullickson advanced to the round of 16 at the Riviera All-American Championships Thursday with a tough, three-set victory over Tennessee’s Natalie Pluskota.

Ranked second nationally, Gullickson outlasted Pluskota, who is ranked No. 84, winning 6-7(4),6-4,7-5. In the round of 16 Friday, Gullickson will face 36th-ranked Michaela Kissell (Marshall). Kissell posted a 6-2,6-2 upset of ninth-ranked Josipa Bek (Clemson). The grand slam tournament features an elite field of 32 in singles and 16 doubles teams.

The sixth-ranked Bulldog duo of Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist fell 8-3 to the third-ranked Stanford tandem of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette. Last year, the Gullickson/Gilchrist duo earned All-America honors, going 13-5 overall including 11 wins over ranked opponents. This was their first doubles match this season, and it came against Stanford’s top duo. The Cardinal team went 27-8 last year.

The All-American Championships is the first of three major events of the season that attracts the nation’s top collegiate tennis players. The other national title opportunities this year are the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships (Nov. 5-8) in New Haven, Conn., and the season-ending NCAA Championships (May 26-31) in Athens, Ga.
