When you’re watching the Georgia Bulldogs play football, did you see number 35 make tons of tackles? That was Rennie Curran! A junior from Snellville, GA, Rennie has been a Georgia Bulldog linebacker for three years, and he has helped the Bulldogs to win 26 games and only lose 5 as of September 27th, 2009! In 2008, Rennie’s stats as a sophomore were very impressive. He led the team in tackles (115), tackles for a loss (10), and forced fumbles (2). That is a lot of tackles! His 115 tackles were the most by any Bulldog since 1998. At the end of last season, the coaches awarded him the team’s most valuable defensive player award. He was also named first team All-SEC and named to CollegeFootballNews.com’s All-Sophomore First Team. Also, Rennie was a finalist for the Butkus Award, which is an award given out to the best linebacker in college football. Plus, he was selected as a fourth-team All-American. Rennie is quite the athlete! Based on his performance from last season, you can bet that Rennie is going to do great things during the 2009 season. Rennie is already off to a great start this season. He has started in all four of Georgia’s games and is quite the defender! In the first game of the 2009 season against Oklahoma State, Rennie tied the team lead with eight tackles! Next against South Carolina, Rennie tied a career-high of 15 tackles and broke up a pass near the goal line on the last play of the game! In the game against Arkansas, Rennie had a team-high 11 tackles and recovered a fumble. The rain did not slow down the hard-hitting linebacker in the game versus Arizona State when Rennie and the Bulldogs were able to scrape by with a close win over the Sun Devils. Although the Dawgs’ were not able to come away victorious against LSU, Rennie helped with the impressive defensive stats as he set a new career high, recording 16 tackles! As defensive captain for the season, Mark Richt, the head football coach, believes that Curran has the ability to lead the Bulldog’s defensive and that he will set a great example for the entire team.
