Bulldogs Eliminated At SEC Coaches' Indoors

January 18, 2009 | Men's Tennis

LEXINGTON, KY.------Georgia's bid for another SEC indoor doubles title fell short Sunday as No. 2 seed Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt were eliminated in the semifinals.

The No. 3 seeded LSU team of Michael Venus and Neal Skupski defeated Schnugg/Hunt 8-6 at the Boone Tennis Center, ending Georgia's run at the tournament. The Bulldogs had a four-year streak of winning either a singles or doubles title at the SEC Coaches' Indoor Championships.

"Everybody is a little disappointed but our spirits are high, we know it's a long road ahead of us," said Georgia coach Manuel Diaz. "We're used to competing for championships, but we'll stay on task these next two weeks leading up to the dual match season.

"Jamie and Nate did a good job and got ahead one break at 5-3 but then the LSU team caught fire," said Diaz. "I've seen very few teams play that well in the second half of a match. They got two breaks in a row and won it."

In consolation singles action, Jon Hamui (Florida) defeated Georgia junior Alex Hill 6-4,6-3. In a consolation doubles semifinal, Hill and Borja Malo fell 8-4 to Cluskey/Gauthier (LSU).

"Our focus now is on Clemson and working hard the next two weeks," said Diaz. "We saw the competition, and we know it will be fierce."

Third-ranked Georgia opens the 2009 dual match season in Athens on Jan. 27 when it plays host to Clemson. The indoor match will begin at 3 p.m. The Tigers, ranked No. 61, open their season next Saturday when they play host to South Alabama and The Citadel.
