Bulldogs Struggle In 2-0 Loss To Stanford

September 07, 2008 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. --- In what seemed to be a repeat performance from Friday night, the No. 22 Georgia Bulldogs struggled on both ends of the field in a 2-0 loss to No. 10 Stanford Sunday afternoon.

Both goals came off the foot of Lindsay Taylor and came about five minutes apart.

The first goal came in the 16th minute when Christen Press served a pass from the far side just outside the 18-yard box and it found Lindsay Taylor, who had just enough free space to fire a shot into the net to give the Cardinal a quick 1-0 advantage.

It took a little more than five minutes for the Cardinal to strike again. In the 21st minute, Taylor got free from the defense again and had a free path to the goal, where she rifled a shot into the right side of the net, passed a diving Michelle Betos, to round out the scoring.

“We played a very talented Stanford team today and they proved why they are one of the best teams in the country,” coach Patrick Baker said. “I thought we played better today than we did on Friday, but it was still in a losing effort. After two first half goals, we were in a delicate spot mentally.”

With 27 shots, 15 of which were on goal, Stanford (5-0) was able to hold a significant time of possession advantage and therefore limiting what the Georgia offense could do. The Bulldogs (2-3) could only get off five shots, but none of them were on goal.

In total for the weekend, the Bulldogs surrendered 51 shots, 26 of which were on goal, and took only nine shots and one shot on goal. It is the first time since 1999 Georgia has lost back-to-back games without scoring a goal and it’s the first time since the 2004 season.

“The main thing is to keep everybody’s head up,” senior defender Megan Tomlinson said. “These are great teams and some good players and they are great competition for us. We just need to come out and play hard and look for results. We just need to keep everybody positive we can only move up and improve from here.”

Even with the losses, Baker said he was proud of the way his players have handled the difficult schedule, especially this weekend.

“I am proud of the way we continued to compete and play hard,” he said. “This is the toughest two opponents we have faced on a back-to-back weekend in my four years at Georgia. We can only get better from the experience in these games. I thought Betos was very good in goal today; she made some great decisions and came up with a number of fantastic saves.”

Georgia has only one game next weekend, but it the opposition will be just as tough. On Friday, the Bulldogs will host the defending national champion USC Trojans in a match scheduled for 7 p.m.
