ATHENS, Ga. --- Four members of the Georgia women’s tennis team will travel to California this weekend to participate in a pre-qualifying event for the 2008 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
Senior Monika Dancevic and sophomore Cameron Ellis, both 5-1 on the year, along with freshman Nadja Gilchrist (4-2), will be competing in singles while Ellis and junior Naoko Ueshima will play doubles. The tournament begins Saturday on the campus of Pepperdine University. There is a 64-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles draw. Participants must win three matches to advance to the qualifying tournament that will begin Sept. 30 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades.
The first round matches will be Dancevic, seeded second, versus Rachel Saiontz (Princeton); Ellis against Vivien Sifany (Boise State); and Gilchrist versus Melissa Mang (Duke). The Ellis/Ueshima duo squares off against Vertesheva/Doane (Cal State-Northridge). Saturday’s schedule will feature two rounds of singles and one round of doubles. On Sunday, there will be a third round of singles and two rounds of doubles.
Meanwhile, Georgia sophomore Yvette Hyndman, freshman Chelsey Gullickson, and Ueshima have already earned a spot in the qualifying singles tournament (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) based on their past performances. The Dancevic/Gilchrist and Hyndman/Gullickson tandems are in the qualifying doubles event too. The Hyndman/Gullickson duo owns a 5-1 record this season including four wins over ranked opponents. In singles this year, Gullickson is 5-1, Ueshima is 4-2 and Hyndman is 2-4. Hyndman is Georgia’s highest ranked singles player at No. 33 while the Hyndman/Gullickson team is ranked No. 23 in doubles.
“This is the most prestigious tournament of the fall, and this is the most players we’ve taken there in the history of our program,” said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. “We’re excited that several of our players have this opportunity and now they have to take advantage of it.”
The Riviera/ITA All-American Championships is the first collegiate grand slam tennis event of the 2008-09 season. The main draw features a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles bracket from Oct. 2-5.
