Georgia Cross Country Travels To Catamount Classic
September 19, 2008 | Cross Country
ATHENS, Ga. --- After sweeping Georgia Tech in a dual meet earlier this month, Georgia’s cross country teams travel to Cullowhee, N.C., today to compete in the Catamount Classic on Saturday morning.
The Lady Bulldogs will compete in a 5000-meter race while the Georgia men will battle competition in an 8000-meter race. Western Carolina is hosting Saturday’s meet, which is the last action for Georgia until the Auburn Invitational arrives on Oct. 4.
“This meet is just the next step for our teams and I think it will benefit both our men and women to compete at a bigger meet on the road,” said Georgia’s first-year coach Jeff Pigg. “I’m looking forward to taking our crew. They have worked really hard the last two weeks and I think they are more than ready to see someone else running against them rather than the teammates they have been practicing with.”
Georgia women finished first, second, fourth and fifth versus Georgia Tech and Pigg hopes that mentality of racing as a team continues during their second test of the season.
“I want to see our women keep a good pack and work together,” Pigg said. “I’m anticipating more and more development from our sophomore class. I am looking forward to seeing some of the girls who have been flying under the radar start (excelling).”
Junior Brian Potts led Georgia in its season opener by finishing second overall while senior Ross Ridgewell, a 2008 All-American in the 800, was fourth and freshman Miles Svoboda crossed the finish line in sixth. Ryley Miller, who exhausted his cross eligibility in 2007, was the first runner to cross the finish line at the dual meet and was the first Bulldog to finish every race last season, including an 18th-place finish at the 2007 Southeastern Conference Championships.
Pigg is looking forward to seeing the new generation of leaders step up for the men’s team.
“I hope to see the men put something together at this meet,” said Pigg. “I want the results to show individual improvement. Potts and some of the other guys should begin to start stepping up and be the face for this program. When you have new leaders like we do this year, I think they will take advantage as more opportunities arrive.”
The Lady Bulldogs jumpstarted their season by beating Georgia Tech 19-40 in a dual meet at the UGA intramural fields on Sept. 4. Senior Natalie Picchetti won the 3200 with a time of 11:11 to pace the Georgia women. On the men’s side, Georgia rolled over the Yellow Jackets 24-34 as Potts (19:28) grabbed the top collegiate finish in the 6200 race.
Results from the Catamount Classic will be posted at georgiadogs.com following Saturday’s races.
