Gym Dogs in the Classroom

In addition to being widely recognized as the premiere collegiate gymnastics program in the country, the Gym Dogs have also come to be known for their success in the classroom.
For their performances in the classroom, Georgia gymnasts have been duly rewarded. In 1993, Jennifer Carbone was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate scholarship to attend medical school, becoming the third Gym Dog to receive such an award and the second to attend medical school.
In 1989, the spotlight was on Paula Maheu as she was awarded a similar scholarship with a $4,000 stipend. Maheu used the award to finish a special five-year program in which she received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in accounting. In 1984, Kathy McMinn used her award to attend medical school.
In 2004, Kinsey Rowe became the Gym Dogs’ most recent winner of an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and followed Carbone and Maheu’s footsteps to medical school.
Georgia boasts 28 female athletes who earned postgraduate scholarships since the NCAA began awarding them in 1983. Georgia is the only school to have two winners in nine different years: 1988, 1989, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004.
Another postgraduate scholarship program available to outstanding student-athletes is the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Four Georgia athletes have earned the award since it was created nine years ago. A $10,000 stipend accompanies the honor, which Georgia winners have used to pursue medical school, law school, advanced education degrees and doctoral certificates in psychology.
