Patterson In The Running For Nation's Top Player
August 19, 2008 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --- Junior forward Carrie Patterson is one of 47 players named to the Hermann Trophy watch list. The Hermann Trophy is given each year to the top women’s soccer player in Division I. It is the first time any player from the University of Georgia has been named to the prestigious award’s watch list.
Four other players from the SEC were named to the watch list. Florida’s Lauren Hyde, LSU’s Malorie Rutledge and Tennessee’s Jaimel Johnson and Kylee Rossi joined Patterson on the list. Other players who will compete against Georgia this season include Marisa Abegg and Kelley O’Hara of Stanford; Yael Averbuch, Tobi Heath and Casey Nogueira of North Carolina; Katie Larkin of BYU; Nikki Krzysik of Virginia; Lorraine Quinn of Duke; and Ashley Nick, Kristin Olson and Amy Rodriguez of USC.
Patterson improved on a phenomenal freshman season with an even better sophomore year. Her 13 goals as a sophomore was one more than the 12 she scored as a freshman and has totaled 63 points during her two-year career with the Bulldogs. She led the SEC in goals scored last season and is a two-time First Team All-SEC member.
“I’m excited and honored to be recognized on this watch list but, as I have said before, my teammates are a huge part of any success I’ve had in the past,” Patterson said. “I hope that I can prove myself and that our team can come together and play up to our potential. It’s a long, hard season and I will definitely use this honor as motivation to help my team in any way.”
The Hermann Trophy award winner is selected by Division I head coaches who are members of the NSCAA. A coaches committee selects a list of 15 semifinalists in November and three finalists will be announced in December. The award winner will be announced at a news conference on Jan. 9.
“The preseason Hermann watch list brought great news to our program today,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “Carrie has accomplished some wonderful things in her first two seasons of college soccer and we are looking for even greater things in her last two seasons. For her to be recognized with so many other great young players nationwide is a honor in itself.”
Patterson will take her first step toward the Hermann Trophy when the Bulldogs host the Mercer Bears at 7 p.m. Friday at the UGA Soccer Complex.
