Georgia Slips In Lone Exhibition Game of Preseason
August 15, 2008 | Soccer
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --- Friday afternoon marked the first and only exhibition match of the 2008 season for the Georgia Bulldogs in a preseason tune-up with Florida State
The preseason contest was designed a little differently than normal with three, 30-minute periods making up the usual 90-minute contest. In between the first and second periods, the teams practiced set plays and corner kicks, with coaches on or near the field to help coach their teams, further adding to the scrimmage style of play.
Each segment was scored separately with Florida State winning the first 30 minutes, 1-0, the teams battling to a 1-1 tie in the second period and Florida State taking the final period, 2-0.
Florida State opened the scoring in the scrimmage with the only goal of the first period off a corner kick. Marrissa Kazbour crossed a ball into the six-yard box that Seminole Erkia Sutton got past Bulldog keeper Michelle Betos to give FSU the 1-0 first period advantage.
The score was reset in the second period, but this time Georgia scored the first goal. Senior defender Megan Tomlinson got behind the defense and shot the ball past the FSU keeper to give Georgia a 1-0 lead at about the 9:30 mark of the second.
Late in the period, the Seminoles responded off a rebound. Florida State’s Tori Huster’s shot ricocheted off the left post and bounced back toward the middle of the field where Toni Pressely buried an uncontested shot to tie the score.
The third period started much like the first two, with each team having minimal scoring opportunities. But with about nine minutes remaining, Florida State scored two goals in about a minute.
The first came on a goal by Jessica Price, who received a pass from Becky Edwards and guided the ball inside the near post for the Seminoles first score. The second goal came about a minute later when Tiffany McCarty headed her initial shot off the crossbar, but it bounced right back to her. She headed the ball into the net past goalkeeper Ashley Baker, who was out of position after going for the first shot attempt.
In total, Georgia was outshot by FSU, 21-6, and had nine corner kicks to Georgia’s two.
Despite losing the game 4-1 by way of period aggregates, coach Patrick Baker was able to test his No. 18 Bulldogs against the No. 4 Seminoles. Baker used different lineups throughout the course of the match against an opponent that played in last season’s NCAA championship match.
“We played a very good team today and they showed why they played in the national championship game last fall,” Baker. “We were a bit under manned due to injuries, but I was pleased with the effort and some of the soccer in all three periods. In a preseason game, you need to be tested and we were in all phases of the game. I look forward to breaking down tape and starting to implement training ideas as we prepare for the season opener. Full credit to Florida State today they were a much better squad and we aspire to be where their program is now.”
The No. 18 Bulldogs will have a week to improve on their exhibition game performance before they open the season against Mercer at 7 p.m. on Aug. 22 at the UGA Soccer Complex.
