ATHENS, Ga. --- Steve Nugent has been named assistant soccer coach at the University of Georgia, head coach Patrick Baker announced Thursday. Nugent has more than 20 years of coaching experience at the college, high school and club levels including 18 years as head coach/director of coaching of Team Boca in Boca Raton, Fla.

“Steve has the type of personality, work ethic and the intangibles that we need,” Baker said. "As I was thinking about those things, Steve came to mind time and time again. There was only one person that we wanted to start the process with and hopefully end the process with and that was Steve. He is excited about bringing his family up in a university environment, especially in Athens, and we feel blessed to have him.”

Nugent served as a graduate assistant on Baker’s staff at Florida State from 2000-01. Under the direction of Baker and Nugent, the Seminoles advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2000.

“It is a dream come true from a soccer coach’s perspective to be associated with someone like Patrick and a university like Georgia,” Nugent said. “It’s not just about the soccer part, but it’s also about the community and everything that UGA athletics is about from the gymnastics team to the basketball program to baseball and football, it’s everything that I would want to be a part of professionally. Being part of a college atmosphere it always something that my family and I have held in highest regard. We are looking forward to being here.”

As head coach of Team Boca, Nugent led his teams to 12 state championships and was named NSCAA Southern Regional Coach of the Year in 2006. He was recognized by the city of Boca Raton on six occasions for outstanding commitment to the youth of Boca Raton through soccer. His teams were twice awarded the Fair Play Award for outstanding sportsmanship during the USYSA Southern Regional Tournament.

Nugent also spent one season as the lead assistant at Rice University where he helped start the women’s soccer program. He was a volunteer assistant coach at Lynn University from 1994-97 and helped guide the Fighting Knights to the 1992, 1994 and 1995 NAIA National Championships.

Nugent has been a member of the Florida Youth Soccer Association Olympic Development Program since 2001 and has played an integral part in the operation of the Orange Classic Tournament, one of the largest girls only soccer tournaments in the United States, held each year in South Florida.

Prior to coaching in the collegiate ranks, Nugent was head coach of various teams including soccer, golf, lacrosse, football and volleyball at Saint Andrews School in Boca Raton, Fla. Since 2001, Nugent has coordinated the Saint Andrews School Soccer Camp and has also served as director of Total Soccer Training. In all, Nugent has 19 years of experience working for various college, club and youth soccer camps.

A native of Boston, Mass., Nugent earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Florida Atlantic University in 1996. He is married to the former Janna Satz of Miami, Fla., and they have one son, Trevor, and are expecting their second child in December.
