Georgia Riders Wrapping Up Busy Summer

July 23, 2008 | Equestrian

ATHENS, Ga. --- A quartet of University of Georgia Equestrian riders typified the active summer of competition the Bulldog program enjoyed away from the collegiate arena.

Laura Upton, a sophomore-to-be from Melbourne, Fla., took home first place in the Amateur Senior Western Pleasure class at the American Paint Horse Association World Show.  Riding her horse Zipped from the Heart, Upton advanced by placing second in her preliminary class before her first-place showing in the finals.  The APHA World Show took place  June 21-July 5 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Rising junior Lauren Love turned in two outstanding performances in the Western discipline.  The College Station, Texas, native won the Amateur Horsemanship Circuit at both the Redbud Spectacular in Oklahoma and the Texas Classic in Fort Worth.  Her victory at Redbud was impressive, given the size of the field (over 70 competitors) and her winning marks from three of the six judges.

In addition, Hunt Seat riders Kelley Cowperthwait and Alex Andes enjoyed success at the Devon Show in Devon, Pa., one of the nation’s oldest, biggest and most prestigious show.  Cowperthwait, a senior from Southampton, N.J., qualified for Devon in the Amateur Owner Hunters 18-35 and placed sixth in the Over Fences class.  Andes, meanwhile, placed 10th in the USEF medal at Devon, as well as sixth in the Small Juniors class.

“We are pleased that our girls have devoted so much of their summer to staying active and keeping sharp,” said Georgia coach Meghan Boenig.  “It helps them individually when they come back in the fall, and it also helps keep our program in a prominent place throughout the country.”

Love also won the Bobbi Pullin Memorial Horsemanship class at the Texas Classic, taking home a sculpture by noted equine artist Marrita McMillian as a trophy.  Cowperthwait also was the reserve champion at the Swan Lake Horse Show in Littlestown, Pa.

The Georgia riders will begin defense of their Varsity Equestrian National Championship on September 20, when they entertain Kansas State in Athens.
