Montgomery Pitches Complete Game Shutout, Bulldogs Defeat Tech
June 02, 2008 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. The top-seeded Georgia Bulldogs received a complete-game shutout from senior Nick Montgomery and used three two-run home runs to post an 8-0 victory over the second seed Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in game six of the Athens Regional on Sunday evening.
“I thought that we played great all day long,” Georgia head coach David Perno said. “I thought that we played to our identity of great pitching and hitting. I thought that we had a lot of good at-bats and did the things that we like to do.”
With the win, Georgia (38-22-1) forces a decisive championship game seven with Georgia Tech (41-20) to be played Monday night at 7:06 p.m. ET (CSS-TV). Georgia Tech, who entered Sunday’s game six from the winner’s bracket, will be the home team for Monday’s championship contest.
Montgomery’s complete-game was the first of his career and the first for the Bulldogs this season. In going the distance for the shutout, he allowed just four hits while striking out a career-high nine and walking just one. Additionally, Montgomery (3-2) faced just 30 batters, three over the minimum with the aid of a double play and a runner caught stealing. The shutout was just the third in Georgia’s postseason history and the first over Georgia Tech since May 14, 1969 covering span of 126 games between the schools.
From the plate, Georgia’s three two-run home runs in the game came from senior Matt Olson, sophomore Matt Cerione and sophomore Rich Poythress. Olson, who went 5-for-6 in game five against Lipscomb earlier on Sunday, provided the Bulldogs with a 2-0 lead in the third inning with the first of the three home runs, which all came off of Georgia Tech starter Eddie Burns (7-5), who took the loss. Fellow senior Ryan Peisel was on base for Olson’s homer after tripling in the previous at-bat.
The second of the two-run long balls came in fifth inning. After having already extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth when junior David Thoms dew a bases loaded walk, Cerione’s two-run home run in the fifth extended the Georgia advantage to 5-0 when he took a two-out pitch out to opposite field.
The third two-run homer came in a three-run seventh inning for the Bulldogs. With junior Gordon Beckham on after recording a base hit to center, Poythress took the first pitch he saw out to left. Two batters later Cerione singled to center field, and after Cerione stole second, redshirt freshman Robbie O'Bryan contributed an RBI single to center giving the Bulldogs an 8-0 edge.
