Bulldogs Conclude Preparations for Stanford
June 19, 2008 | Baseball
OMAHA, Neb. --- For the second straight day, sixth-ranked Georgia worked out for 90 minutes at Bellevue East High School in preparation for their upcoming College World Series contest against Stanford Friday.
The Bulldogs (43-23-1) are 2-0 at the CWS following wins over top-ranked Miami and seventh-ranked Stanford. Georgia will face the Cardinal (41-23-2) Friday at 2 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Stanford eliminated top-ranked Miami 8-3 on Wednesday. Georgia needs one more victory in its half of the bracket to advance to the national championship series, a best two-out-of-three game format that begins Monday.
"We've seen Stanford, and we know they are well-coached and play very good baseball," said Georgia coach David Perno. "We don't get caught up with who we are playing because it's about us and doing what we do well. That's what is important. It was a great game the last time with them, and we happened to score one more run and won. Everybody is on edge and ready to play after these past few off days. We feel a little caged up so we're excited to be playing Friday."
Junior right-hander Trevor Holder will get the start Friday for the Bulldogs. It will be his team-leading 17th start this season, and he is 8-4 with a 4.45 ERA. He started the CWS opener against the Hurricanes last Saturday and got a no decision. He pitched four innings and allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts. In the postseason this year, Holder is 1-0 with a 4.32 ERA in three starts over a span of 16.2 innings. Georgia's bullpen in the CWS has allowed just one run in 11 innings.
The Bulldogs have started out 2-0 in the CWS for only the second time in six appearances. Prior to this year, the last time Georgia began a CWS 2-0 was the 1990 national championship season. The Bulldogs are now 8-9 all-time at the CWS including 4-4 under Perno.
