May 09, 2008 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia junior shortstop Gordon Beckham has been named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District baseball team, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Friday.
Beckham, a 6-0, 185-pound native of Atlanta, Ga., is a National Player of the Year candidate majoring in real estate. He leads the country in three offensive categories including 22 home runs and is a key member of the eighth-ranked and Southeastern Conference leading Bulldogs. Beckham is batting .409-22-52 overall and .402-12-28 in SEC action, ranking in the top ten of 11 of the league's 12 statistical categories.
As an All-District selection, Beckham will now be on the national ballot with the other district winners from the eight regions around the country who will contend for Academic All-America honors. Each district team features 11 student-athletes (two pitchers, four infielders, three outfielders and a catcher and designated hitter) and the national winners will be announced later this year.
Beckham is on several national award watch lists including the Dick Howser Trophy and Brooks Wallace Award, and is a Golden Spikes Award nominee. Baseball America projects Beckham as a first round selection in next month's amateur draft.
The SEC-leading eighth-ranked Bulldogs face No. 16 Vanderbilt in Nashville Friday at 7:06 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised by CSS.
