Wind Suspends Second Round Of NCAA Women's Golf

May 22, 2008 | Women's Golf

Albuquerque, N.M. --- Wind wreaked havoc on the second day of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Wednesday, with a pair of delays eventually resulting in play being suspended for the day with 12 teams not halfway through their rounds.

Georgia is tied for sixth among the dozen teams off the University of Mexico's Championship Course.

Southern Cal and UCLA are the leaders in the clubhouse at 8-over 584. Following the Women of Troy and Bruins are Denver at 587, Arizona State at 591, Duke at 598, the Bulldogs and Florida both at 600, Purdue at 602, Auburn at 604, TCU at 608, UNLV at 611 and Arizona at 616.

Georgia was one of three teams off the course before an initial two-plus hour delay. The Bulldogs carded a 15-over 303, losing eight strokes on the final five holes as they played into a consistent 25 mile per hour headwind with gusts up to 40 mph. At 1:10 p.m. MT -- just minutes after Garrett Phillips finished Georgia's round -- sirens sounded to suspend play.

Phillips and Krystle Caithness posted 2-over 74s to lead the Bulldogs. Georgia also counted a 77 from Innapha Tantanavivat and a 78 from Carolina Andrade, while dropping Mallory Hetzel's 80.

The Bulldogs struggled on the front side and turned at 10-over while playing in a steady 10-15 mph wind. Georgia rallied to pick up three of those shots on the first four holes of the back nine but gave those back as well as five more when winds doubled down the stretch.

"I was really proud of our effort," head coach Kelley Hester said. "We just missed quite a few short putts, which is very uncharacteristic of this team. I have to mark some of that up to the strong winds all day. It's not easy to putt when the wind is blowing so hard. You're worried about your ball moving. It's hard to stand still. It's hard to stroke the ball. We fought hard for every shot. It's only natural you're going to have a couple of shots slip away with that strong of a wind, but overall I was really pleased with our effort."

Play resumed at 3:19 p.m. with nine teams wrapping up their final holes and the 12 squads playing in the afternoon very early in their rounds or just hitting course. Almost immediately after the remaining teams from the morning wave completed their round, play was suspended once again at 4:55 p.m.

The second round will now be completed on Thursday morning beginning at 7:00 a.m., with the third round expected to start almost immediately thereafter.

Individual standings are incomplete since half the field is yet to finish the second round; however, for Georgia through 36 holes, Phillips is at 1-over 143, Caithness is at 150, Tantanavivat is at 152 and Andrade and Hetzel are both at 155.
