Georgia Softball Concludes Regular Season Against Top-Ranked Alabama
April 30, 2008 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia softball team (42-19, 13-12 SEC) will conclude its 2008 regular season campaign by playing host to the No. 1-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (47-4, 23-2 SEC) for a three-game Southeastern Conference series May 3-4.
Georgia and Alabama will play a double header May 3 starting at 1 p.m. ET. The teams will meet again May 4 for the series finale, which will be televised by Fox Sports Net with first pitch scheduled for 2:07 p.m. Prior to the twin bill on May 3, the seniors will be honored. Georgia’s senior class includes Sojourner Moody, Victoria Sanders and Melissa Wood.
Georgia and Alabama both enter the series with secured berths to the SEC Tournament, which will be held May 8-10 in Baton Rouge, La. Entering this weekend, Georgia is currently ranked fifth in the SEC, while Alabama is ranked second. Depending on what happens around the league this weekend, the Bulldogs could be seeded anywhere from third to seventh at the tournament. The Crimson Tide, who has already clinched the SEC Western Division title, will be playing for the chance to win the outright regular-season SEC crown and the number one seed in the tournament. Alabama enters with a 23-2 conference mark, while the Florida Gators currently hold down the number one spot with a 24-1 record. Florida plays at Tennessee this weekend.
Georgia returns home to conclude the regular season after sweeping the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, Ky., April 26-27. In that series, the Bulldogs scored 28 runs while limiting the Wildcats to just seven runs. Prior to sweeping Kentucky, the Georgia squad also posted two wins over Mercer on April 23 in Athens.
Alabama will visit Athens after having a 26-game winning streak snapped this past Tuesday by 20th-ranked DePaul. After defeating 12th-ranked Northwestern 6-5 in eight innings to extend the winning streak earlier in the day, Alabama went into extra’s again with DePaul but fell 1-0 after eight innings. The 26-game winning streak is the second longest streak in Alabama history behind the 2001 squad’s 27-game streak. Despite having its overall winning streak snapped, Alabama will still carry a 20-game winning streak in SEC play into the series with Georgia.
Last year, Georgia traveled to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on a then third-ranked Alabama team during the regular season. The Bulldogs won the first game of the series 2-1, marking the first win over a top-three ranked opponent in school history. Alabama won last year’s series by taking the next two games 10-2 and 9-2. The teams met once again at the SEC Tournament, with Alabama winning that contest 3-2.
In the overall series history between the schools, Alabama leads Georgia 21-10. Over the last ten meetings, Alabama has won seven times and Georgia has won three times.
