April 26, 2008 | Gymnastics

ATHENS, Ga. In the wake of leading the Georgia gymnastics team to a ninth NCAA title Friday night, head coach Suzanne Yoculan was named National Coach of the Year, the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women announced Saturday.

It is the fifth such honor for Yoculan, who also was named the nation’s coach of the year after national championship seasons in 1987, 1993, 1998 and 2006.

“I know this is my award, but it really should go to the seniors,” Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan said. “They are why I’ve had the success I’ve had, and I really owe this award to them. They’ve poured their heart and soul into this program for four years and everything I’ve accomplished has been because of them and the girls on our team.”

Georgia capped its 2008 season with a fourth straight NCAA title Friday night in its home arena of Stegeman Coliseum. They also claimed Southeastern Conference and Regional titles while finishing 31-2 for the year.

In 25 years at the helm of the Gym Dog program, Yoculan has led her teams to nine NCAA titles, 16 SEC titles and 20 NCAA Regional titles. Her teams have placed in the nation’s top 3 in 20 of the last 22 years.

Yoculan also collected her 800th career victory in Friday’s Super Six. Her overall record stands at 804-116-7.
