Georgia Softball To Face Georgia State Wednesday

March 18, 2008 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia softball team (26-8) faces its first in-state opponent of the season on Wednesday when the Bulldogs travel to Atlanta for a double header with the Georgia State Panthers (19-6). First pitch of the twin bill is slated for 4 p.m. ET.

Georgia enters the midweek contest riding a seven game winning streak after winning the Bulldog Invitational and sweeping a Southeastern Conference three-game series with South Carolina. Over that seven game stretch, the Bulldogs offense has posted a team batting average of .339, while the pitchers' combined ERA stands at 0.58.

While Wednesday’s meeting will be Georgia’s first with an in-state opponent, Georgia State holds a 5-1 record versus teams from the Peach State this year. The Panthers have defeated Georgia Tech, Savannah State (twice) and Kennesaw State, while splitting a pair of games with Mercer. The loss to Mercer came by just one run in extra innings, and the Panthers have out scored in-state opponents 82-15.

Over the last ten games each school has played, Georgia is 7-3 and Georgia State is 5-5.

The Bulldogs lead the all-time series with the Panthers 8-2 including a 9-0 win in the last meeting in 2007. Georgia has won seven straight in the series with Georgia State’s last win coming in 2000.

Updated national rankings will be released on Tuesday afternoon. In last week’s rankings, Georgia was No. 20 in the USA Softball/ESPN.com poll and No. 22 in the USA Today/NFCA poll.
