Lady Bulldogs Down South Carolina, 55-41
February 29, 2008 | Women's Basketball
COLUMBIA, S.C. --- Angel Robinson scored 16 points to lead three Georgia players in double figures as the No. 22-ranked Lady Bulldogs (21-7, 8-5 SEC) secured a 55-41 victory over South Carolina (14-14, 3-10 SEC) on Thursday evening.
Megan Darrah added 13 points -- including 11 in the first half -- and Tasha Humphrey chipped in 11. Brionna Dickerson was the only South Carolina player in double figures with 11.
The Lady Dogs raced to a 20-point lead in the first half and then maintained that advantage for much of the second stanza. The Gamecocks cut the margin to 13 on several occasions in the second half but couldn't get any closer until LaKesha Tolliver pulled them within 11 with 1:58 remaining. Ashley Houts hit both ends of a one-and-one on Georgia's ensuing possession to end any doubt.
"I thought defensively we were very, very good, and I thought defensively that South Carolina was very good," Andy Landers said. "We just scored more points. Megan was great in the first half and the difference in us being able to take a lead. After that, everyone chipped in. It may have looked kind of ugly from an offensive perspective, but I think most of that was because both Georgia and South Carolina did a good job doing what they wanted to to be disruptive on that end."
After trailing 8-4 early, Darrah and Humphrey knocked down consecutive threes to get the Lady Bulldogs going. Darrah's three pushed her over the 1,000-point career scoring plateau, the 29th Lady Bulldog to reach that standard, and also ignited a 13-0 run over the next 3:56 that gave Georgia a 17-8 edge.
A layup by Robinson at the 6:41 mark gave Georgia a 23-12 lead and a double-digit edge for the rest of the stanza. The margin topped out at 34-14.
