Georgia: 197.675, Kentucky: 194.800
ATHENS, Ga. --- The top-ranked Georgia gymnastics team recorded a season-high overall score and set season-highs in two events as it led to a 197.675-194.800 win over Kentucky in front of another sellout crowd of 10,224 at Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday.
The Gym Dogs’ 197.675 was their highest score since a 197.850 in the Super Six last year.
Georgia (7-1, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) improved to 61-0 all-time against the Wildcats (1-6, 1-5 SEC), who suffered their sixth straight loss.
The Gym Dogs’ Cassidy McComb won the all-around with a 39.550 becoming the first Georgia freshman to win the all-around since Courtney Kupets in 2006. McComb’s 39.550 is the team’s second-highest all-around score this year behind Kupets’ 39.750 against LSU. Tiffany Tolnay finished second with a 39.525.
“This was a great meet for us and will do a lot in terms of our confidence,” Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan said. “It was especially great to see Cassidy and Tiffany do what they did competing all four events. There were a lot of high points for sure. Courtney McCool was great for us again, as always.
“The one event where we underperformed again tonight as a whole was on the balance beam,” she added. “We took Katie (Heenan) out so she could do floor, and we were without Courtney (Kupets) who had the concussion the week before. We aren’t reaching our potential there, so we’re going to have to get our lineup set so we can build some momentum going into the postseason.”
Georgia began the meet on vault, scoring a season-high 49.475. The Gym Dogs’ score topped their previous high of 49.425 against N.C. State. Leading the way was Katie Heenan with a 9.950, McComb with a season-high 9.925 and Tiffany Tolnay with a 9.900. Marcia Newby, Tolnay and Kupets all landed a 9.850. Georgia led 49.475-47.975 after the first rotation.
In the second rotation, the Gym Dogs scored another season-high with a 49.550 on bars, trumping the previous high of 49.425 at Alabama. It was their highest score on bars since a 49.575 against Iowa State in 2004. Pacing the Gym Dogs was Kupets, who matched her score against N.C. State with a 9.975. Tolnay notched the second-highest score for Georgia with a career-high 9.925, and McComb also set a new career-high with a 9.900. Newby and Heenan registered 9.875s.
