Georgia Tops Mississippi State, 60-56

February 18, 2008 | Women's Basketball

STARKEVILLE, Miss. --- Ashley Houts sank a pair of free throws with 1.7 seconds left to finally secure a 60-56 victory for the Georgia Lady Bulldogs (19-7, 6-5 SEC) over Mississippi State (15-11, 3-8 SEC) on Sunday afternoon.

"It wasn't pretty by any means but a road win the SEC is tough to come by," Andy Landers said. "It seems to go like this every time we play in Starkville."

Georgia improved to 22-10 all-time against Mississippi State but is just 9-6 against MSU at Humphrey Coliseum. Seven of the last nine games in Starkville have been decided by six points or less.

Freshman Angela Puleo scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs, while Tasha Humphrey chipped in 14 and Megan Darrah added 10.

Humphrey grabbed 11 boards for her third straight double-double, 11th of the season and 46th of her career. She also moved into a tie with Kelly Miller at the No. 3 spot among the Lady Bulldogs' career scoring leaders with 2,177 points. Humphrey is 18 points away from Katrina McClain in the No. 2 spot.

The back-and-forth battle featured no less than 14 ties and 10 lead changes and the Lady Bulldogs didn't take the lead for good until an Puleo jumper with 1:36 remaining. Neither team scored again until Georgia gained possession when MSU's Imesia Jackson traveled when she fell to the floor with an offensive rebound with 3.6 seconds left. The Lady Bulldogs long inbounds pass left Houts in a breakaway situation but she was fouled with 1.7 seconds left.

The first half featured eight ties and six lead changes. Christy Marshall scored seven straight to help Georgia grab a 29-24 edge -- the largest lead for either team in the half -- with 1:13 remaining in the period.

The Lady Bulldogs built an eight-point, 43-35 edge on an old-fashioned three-point play by Puleo at the 10:53 mark, but State rallied to claim a 48-47 advantage less than five minutes later.

The Lady Bulldogs missed several opportunities to expand their first-half lead even further while connecting on an uncharacteristic 2-of-7 free throws. Georgia entered the day leading the SEC in free throw percentage at 74.1 percent, including hitting 84.8 percent in league play. The Lady Dogs then converted on 9-of-9 attempts at the charity stripe in the second stanza.

The Lady Bulldogs will enjoy an open date this Thursday before returning to action when they host Auburn at Stegeman Coliseum next Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The Tigers defeated Georgia, 82-52, in Auburn on Jan. 13, Georgia's worst loss in the current millennium.

Tickets for the game are $5 for adults and $3 for youth high school age and younger, while UGA faculty, staff and students are admitted free with their UGA Card. Tickets are on sale this week both at the UGA Ticket Office in the Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and online at www.georgiadogs.com. Tickets also will be on sale at Stegeman Coilseum beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
