Athens Outtakes: Presidential Race Worth Talking About
February 12, 2008 | Women's Basketball
Lady Bulldog freshman Angela Puleo is writing a weekly "Athens Outtakes" column for her hometown newspaper, The Daily Times in Maryville, Tenn., about the transition from high school to college and her experiences at the University of Georgia. Puleo became the 61st freshman to earn a starting spot with the Lady Bulldogs during Andy Landers tenure and the 21st to do so in their collegiate debut. Maryville also is the hometown of Landers, Georgia's Hall of Fame coach.
ATHENS, Ga. --- Our struggles on the court and winning games continue to haunt us.
There really is not much more to say about it. We had two games last week in which we could have made our race for the SEC more probable but came up short on both attempts.
School is moving at a rapid pace and tests are on the horizon. My first test in political science is coming up next week. If you know me at all, you know that, like the rest of my family, I am passionate about politics. Many times I have gotten on my friends’ nerves (Jama!!), while expressing my opinions about every issue that is brought up.
Mrs. Libby Breeding, my sixth-grade math teacher, recognized this enthusiasm and allowed me to come to McGhee Tyson Airport and listen to then presidential-hopeful Al Gore speak to a large crowd. This just strengthened my appreciation for the complexity of the workings of politics. It’s even more exciting because for the first time I will be able to vote!! I won’t tell you how I’m voting because half of you would hate me and half of you would love me. Let’s just say it is a tremendous privilege to have this right.
It is easy to get into a routine and forget how so very lucky you are to have the opportunity to be in college at an elite university. It’s really unfortunate that sometimes we get so used to things that we tend to take them for granted. I know it is sometimes difficult, but I challenge you every day to take a deep breath and realize the great things and people that surround you.
Go Dawgs and Go Vote!!!
