How Long Does It Take To Choreograph Routines?

December 11, 2008 | Gymnastics

Lesley from Atlanta asks...

How long does it take to choreograph the routines? How much input do the gymnast get as to the music, dance moves, and tricks?

Dear Elizabeth:

The girls on our team hire Russell Warfield to choreograph their routines.  It takes him a couple of hours per gymnast.  As the fall progresses, Julie Clark tweaks the routines and makes the necessary changes as we had tumbling.

The girls on our team choose their own music.  We believe it is very important for the music choice to reflect their style and music preferences, not mine.  That is what I like best about our routines; they are all different.  If the gymnast cannot think of a piece of music then Russell assists them and makes suggestions.  He knows our athletes well and does a great job of selecting music.  As far as the tumbling is concerned, we work with each athlete individually.  We want them to compete the highest level of tumbling possible with safety and consistency,  as a priority.

Thanks for your interest.
