Hunt, Schnugg Eliminated At ITA National Indoor Tournament
November 06, 2008 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-----Georgia’s eighth-ranked doubles team of Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg fell in the first round of the ITA National Indoor Tournament, and Schnugg also lost a close singles match Thursday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
The Bulldog juniors fell to Tulsa’s 44th-ranked duo of Arnau Brugues and Phil Stevens, 8-5, in the round of 16. Then Schnugg, ranked 12th nationally, was defeated by No. 31 Enrique Olivares of East Tennessee State, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6. The matchup featured the last two Southern Intercollegiate Champions as Schnugg won the title in 2007, and Olivares was the winner just two months ago in Athens.
“Nate did a pretty good job for a set and two-thirds, but he just stumbled a little bit,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “He had a chance to close the match out, but Olivares is very resourceful and very dangerous and did a better job overall. It was a good effort and one that could’ve gone our way. Still all the credit goes to Olivares. He seemed to play better as the match went on.
“In doubles we didn’t play as well as we did in the regional. We had been playing well, but it wasn’t a very good day today.”
Hunt and Schnugg will play consolation matches Friday at 8:30 a.m. The rest of the Bulldogs will also be in action this weekend at the Bulldog Scramble in Athens. The three-day tournament begins Friday at 9 a.m.
