Georgia Volleyball Travels To Ole Miss, Arkansas This Weekend
November 17, 2008 | Volleyball
ATHENS, Ga. The Georgia volleyball team will play two of its remaining three regular season contests this weekend traveling to face Ole Miss and Arkansas.
This Week For The Bulldogs
At Ole Miss, Friday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. ET (Gillom Sports Center)
At Arkansas, Sunday, Nov. 23 at 2:30 p.m. ET (Barnhill Arena)
The Bulldogs (16-12, 9-8 Southeastern Conference) have three matches remaining on their 2008 regular season schedule, all against SEC Western Division schools. This weekend, Georgia will first travel to Oxford, Miss., to face the Ole Miss Rebels (12-14, 8-9 SEC) on Friday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. ET at the Gillom Sports Center. Next, on Sunday, Nov. 23, the Bulldogs will be in Fayetteville, Ark., to face the Arkansas Razorbacks (7-20, 4-13 SEC) at 2:30 p.m. ET in Barnhill Arena.
In the first meeting earlier this season with Ole Miss, the Rebels defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-21, 25-23 and 25-26) in Athens. It marked Ole Miss’ second-consecutive win in the series, but Georgia has won six of the last 10 and leads the all-time series 35-9. In the first meeting of the year with Arkansas, the Bulldogs defeated the Razorbacks 3-0 (25-22, 25-15 and 25-23) at the Ramsey Center. That win snapped a five-match winning streak in the series by the Razorbacks, but Arkansas still holds a 13-5 all-time series advantage.
Last Week For The Bulldogs
Defeated Auburn, 3-1 (12-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-22)
Last week, Georgia played just one match defeating Auburn 3-1 to finish its home schedule 9-5. That victory was significant for the Bulldogs in multiple ways. First, it secured a winning season for the Bulldogs as they improved to four matches above .500 at 16-12 with just three matches remaining. Second, it was also Georgia’s ninth SEC victory of the season. The nine league wins are the most by a Georgia squad since 2004. If the Bulldogs win one of the final three matches remaining they will equal the 2003 squad’s 10 league wins. If the Bulldogs win two of the three remaining contests they will tally 11 SEC wins, a feat last achieved by a Georgia squad in 1995. And if Georgia can win out and reach 12 SEC wins, it would tie the school record for conference victories in a single season (1991, 1993 & 1994).
Georgia used a 14.5 team-blocking effort to earn the victory over Auburn led by a team-best seven from freshman middle hitter Ann Dylla. Three of Dylla’s blocks were solos blocks, the most solo stops by a Bulldog this season. On the offensive side of the net, senior outside hitter Maria Taylor led the Bulldogs with 15 kills on a .412 attack percentage. Dylla added to the offensive output by providing six kills no errors on a .545 clip. Freshman setter Kathleen Gates set the table for the UGA offensive with 33 assists, which moved her season total to 1,013. Gates is just the ninth Bulldog in school history to eclipse 1,000 career assists.
