Georgia Soccer Players Of The Week: Week 7

October 07, 2008 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. --- This week’s Georgia Soccer Players of the Week are the two players who combined for all three of the Bulldogs goals in games against Arkansas and LSU last weekend.

Freshman Ashley Miller, who was named the Georgia Soccer Newcomer of the Week, scored the game-winning goal in Friday’s 2-1 double overtime victory over Arkansas. The goal was her first since her two-goal effort in the season opener against Mercer. She also assisted on Carrie Patterson’s game-tying goal earlier in the match.

“Ashley played her best soccer and most complete games this past weekend. She impacted the Arkansas game immediately and finished with the game tying assist and scored the eventual game-winning goal in overtime,” head coach Patrick Baker said. “Ashley played well again on Sunday against LSU and created some great interchange with Carrie Patterson up top. Hopefully this was a break through weekend for her and we will get this level of performance every time we step out to play.”

“We have a couple big weekends coming up and we really need to perform well and come out with wins,” Miller said.

Patterson, named the Georgia Soccer Player of the Week, scored in her second- and third-consecutive games during last weekend’s action. On Friday, she scored the game-tying goal just 1:10 seconds after Arkansas took a 1-0 lead. On Sunday, she scored the Bulldogs’ lone goal of the game. That goal, however, was the 30th of Patterson’s career and placed her second on Georgia’s all-time goals scored list.

“This past weekend was not exactly what we had hoped for, but it is a positive that we came out with a win on Friday,” she said. “We will move on from the game on Sunday and learn from how we played and the mistakes we made. Although I am happy to be recognized, I am playing with 10 other people on the field and I cannot give my teammates enough credit.”

“Carrie created and benefited from some very good play in the final third,” Baker said. “After going down 1-0 to Arkansas, Carrie was able to equalize within two minutes on fantastic finish, then screened the keeper on the game winner in overtime that allowed Ashley's header to reach the back of the net. Against LSU on Sunday, Carrie scored with 12 minutes to go to get us back into the game, but we couldn't pull even down the stretch. Carrie was a handful for our opponents all weekend and continues to find the net with regularity.”

The Bulldogs will spend their last full weekend at home beginning Friday in a 7 p.m. contest with Vanderbilt. On Sunday, the Bulldogs will host Kentucky in a match scheduled for 1 p.m.
