How is Lauren Johnson?

October 06, 2008 | Gymnastics

Stefanie from Marrietta asks Suzanne.....

Suzanne,

You mentioned at Sneak-a-Peek last year that before her injury, Lauren Johnson had become one of the team's top three vaulters. I'm wondering how she's doing now. Is she recovered, and if so, how is her vaulting? With three new freshmen, what are her chances of making vault lineup. I love to see the walk-on girls do well (Lauren Sessler had me jumping out of my seat at NCAA's!) and I was hoping that she would be able to contribute this year.

Go Dawgs,
Stefanie

Dear Stefanie:

Yes, Lauren (LJ) was doing great last year when she tore her ACL.  She is working hard and very determined to return to the same status she had last year at the time of her injury.  It has been a uphill struggle.  LJ had a small set back a month ago when she had to have the pin in her knee removed.  At times, she still has some swelling and has to stop and other days, she is vaults with no problems.   It is really too early to tell whether or not she will return to line up status.  If she does not, it will not be due to effort or determination.  LJ is totally committed.

Yes, it was very exciting last year when Sessie vaulted at Nationals and performed so well.  I love to see athletes who work hard succeed and with walk ons, you know  their heart is in it or they wouldn’t be in the gym everyday.  Sessie is doing well and we expect to vault a lot this season.
