Georgia Soccer Travels To Alabama Sunday

October 24, 2008 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia Bulldog soccer team will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for a 2 p.m. ET kick off with Alabama Sunday, in hopes of beginning another winning streak after losing their Thursday night contest with the Auburn Tigers. The Bulldogs have just two regular season contests remaining before they head to Orange Beach, Ala., for the SEC Tournament, which begins Nov. 5.

Thursday Night Against The Tigers
The Georgia soccer team celebrated Senior Night Thursday at the UGA Soccer Stadium, but couldn’t enjoy victory as the host Bulldogs dropped a 1-0 contest to the visiting Auburn Tigers in front of 1,161 fans and a Fox Soccer Channel audience.

All four of Georgia’s seniors started the game and was the first start of the season for Ashley Stinson and Courtney Cripps, while Cripps made her first ever start for the Bulldogs in goal.

Cripps, however, would take the loss as Auburn’s goal came in the 14th minute on a shot that not many keepers in the nation would be able to stop.

Auburn (9-7-2, 5-3-1) had a frenetic sequence right in front of Cripps and senior defender Kristin Garman cleared a ball off Georgia’s goal line. The ball, however, would find Auburn freshman Katy Frierson, who was 30 yards from net. That would not deter her from firing a one-timer that sailed over everyone’s head into the left side of the net that would give Auburn a 1-0 lead.

The game went back and forth the rest of the way as both teams mounted good offensive sequences, but couldn’t generate any other scores.

Although Georgia (7-9-1, 5-3-1) outshot Auburn 10-8, with seven of its 10 shots reaching net, the Bulldogs couldn’t get any good quality shots inside their 18-yard box most of the game. The Bulldogs even sent senior defender Megan Tomlinson up top to try to generate strong scoring chances, but couldn’t get the equalizer.

Current SEC Tournament Standings
As the Bulldogs head into Sunday’s contest, they are one of three teams who have totaled 16 points during the conference season. Currently, the Bulldogs are in fourth place, while Auburn, who owns the head-to-head matchup with Georgia, is in third and Tennessee is in fifth as a result of its total goal differential. Florida wrapped up the regular season title, its ninth in 14 seasons, with a victory Thursday night against Arkansas. LSU ranks second and South Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas round out the top eight. Only the top eight teams will earn a berth in the SEC Tournament.

Up Next
The Bulldogs will wrap up their regular season with a Halloween contest against the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. The game is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. ET Oct. 31 in Knoxville, Tenn. The SEC Tournament will begin Nov. 5 in Orange Beach, Ala., where the top eight teams in the SEC will compete for an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, beginning Nov. 14.
