Swimming And Diving Teams Rank In Preseason Top 10

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia swimming and diving teams claimed a couple of the top spots in their respective dual meet rankings in the first College Swim Coaches Association of America poll.
On the women’s side, the Lady Bulldogs checked in at No. 2 with 229 total points. The Lady Bulldogs finished with the No. 1 spot in the final 2007-08 poll and finished seventh at last season’s NCAA Championships.
Georgia is one four SEC schools to be ranked in the to poll’s top 10, with Florida earning a No. 4 ranking, Auburn checking in at No. 6 and Tennessee rounding out the top 10. The Pac-10 had three teams in the top 10 and the Big 12 had two. Arkansas and Alabama were also ranked in the poll, as the Razorbacks checked in at No. 21 and Alabama rounded out the top 25.
Arizona was the unanimous No. 1 choice in the poll, receiving 240 total points. Following Arizona was Georgia, Stanford, Florida, Cal, Auburn, Texas, Indiana, Texas A&M and Tennessee.
On the men’s side, the Bulldogs earned the No. 9 overall ranking in opening poll, up one spot from the final 2007-08 rankings. Georgia finished the 2008 season with a seventh place showing at the NCAA Championships.
Florida (No. 4), Auburn (No. 6) and Tennessee (No. 8) join Georgia as the other SEC schools earning top 10 distinctions, while LSU also earned a spot in the top 25 at No. 17.
The Texas Longhorns received all but one of the first-place votes and finished with 238 points to earn the top ranking on the men’s side. Stanford came in at No. 2, while Arizona had the other first-place vote as it checked in at No. 3. Michigan (No. 5), California (No. 7) and Minnesota (No. 10) rounded out the poll’s top 10.
Both Georgia teams opened the 2008-09 season with victories at North Carolina. The men’s team won a hard-fought 152-148 decision while the women cruised to a 169-126 victory. The squads will next travel to Gainesville, Fla., for dual meets with the Florida Gators on Oct. 30. Georgia’s first home meet of the season will be Nov. 5 when they host Georgia Tech at 4 p.m.
