Lady Bulldogs Tabbed Fourth In SEC By Media

October 21, 2008 | Women's Basketball

Birmingham, Ala. --- A panel of 25 SEC and national media members tabbed the Georgia Lady Bulldogs to finish fourth in the league during the upcoming 2008-09 season, the conference office announced on Tuesday. In addition, Georgia's Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson were named first- and second-team All-SEC, respectively.

Each member of the panel ranked the teams' projected order of finish, with 12 points awarded for a first-place vote, 11 for second, etc.

The media chose Vanderbilt as the favorite to win the league title with 273 points. Tennessee was second with 261 points, followed by Auburn (246), Georgia (216), LSU (183), Florida (174), Kentucky (129), Ole Miss (126), Mississippi State (87), Arkansas (81), South Carolina (72) and Alabama (25).

The Commodores were atop the list of 12 voters, while Tennessee earned nine first-place votes and Georgia four.

Houts, the 2007 SEC Freshman of the Year and a 2008 All-SEC selection of both league coaches and media, was joined on the first team by Auburn's DeWanna Bonner, who was also tabbed Preseason Player of the Year, Florida's Marshae Dotson, Ole Miss' Shawn Goff and Vanderbilt's Christina Wirth.

Robinson was included on the second team with Auburn's Whitney Boddie, Florida's Sha Brooks, LSU's Allison Hightower and Tennessee's Angie Bjorklund and Shekinna Stricklen.

The 2008-09 SEC Media Preseason Poll tips off SEC Basketball Media Days, which are Wednesday and Thursday at the Birmingham Marriott in Alabama. Georgia will take part in the event on Thursday morning, with head coach Andy Landers and Houts representing the program.

The Lady Bulldogs return three starters -- Houts, Robinson and Angela Puleo -- and four more letterwinners from a team that finished 23-10 and reached the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament last spring.

Georgia will host the SEHR All-Stars in an exhibition game on Wednesday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. before facing Alabama State in the regular-season opener on Saturday, November 15 at noon at Stegeman Coliseum.

Season tickets for Lady Bulldog Basketball are currently on sale to last year's season ticket holders and will go on sale to the general public on August 30.
