Hunt, Schnugg Advance To Doubles Semifinals At ITA Regional

LEXINGTON, Ky. --- Georgia juniors Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg advanced to the doubles semifinals of the ITA Southeast Regional Friday in Lexington, Ky.
The eighth-ranked doubles team topped Middle Tennessee State’s Richard Cowden and John Peers, 8-5, and will face Tennessee’s Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith in the semifinals on Sunday.
“Nate and Jamie played another very good match,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “They seem to be gelling well and playing high caliber tennis.”
In singles action, four Bulldogs including Hunt, Schnugg, Javier Garrapiz and Josh Varela advanced to the round of 32, which will be played Saturday. Hunt won a three-set match, 6-7, 6-0, 6-1 against Ervin Garibovich of Florida Gulf Coast, Schnugg edged Vanderbilt’s Alex Zotov, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6, Garrapiz topped Ole Miss’ Ignacio Taboada, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, and Varela rallied to beat Ole Miss’ David Rosenfeld, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, all in the round of 64.
“I’m really proud of the progress we are making,” Diaz said. “We had several quality wins against some good opponents.”
In the round of 128, sophomore Drake Bernstein defeated Eastern Kentucky’s Mel Segota, 6-2, 7-6(9), before falling to the tournament’s No. 2 seed John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee, 6-2, 6-2. Christian Vitulli dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Kentucky’s Alex Musialek in the round of 64.
Third round main draw singles action begins Saturday at 1:00 p.m. followed by two rounds of consolation matches.
