Georgia Soccer Players of the Week: Week 8
October 14, 2008 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --- The players who started at right midfield and right back last weekend for the Bulldogs have been selected by head coach Patrick Baker and staff as the team’s players of the week.
The Georgia Soccer Newcomer of the Week was awarded to redshirt freshman midfielder Caroline Burlingame and the Player of the Week was awarded to senior defender Kristin Garman.
Burlingame started her first games for the Bulldogs this weekend, lining up at the right midfield position. Burlingame, who used a medical redshirt in 2007 while recovering from a knee injury, was effective in her time on the field and brought good energy to the field last weekend.
“Caroline earned her way into the starting lineup before the weekend and really did a nice job in the wide midfield spot,” head coach Patrick Baker said. “Her defensive play was a big help against Vanderbilt and Kentucky and she really helped our back line see less of the ball. She made some nice off the ball runs and created a few chances for us in the run of play. It is encouraging to see how far she has come in such a short period of time.”
“I'm just glad I was able to contribute to our team's success when called upon this weekend,” Burlingame said. “I know everyone on the team is eager to keep this work rate up and ready to continue to get results in our favor for the rest of the season. Everyone on the team has continued to work hard and I think everyone is excited that it is starting to pay off. We are beginning to see some good things as a result of all of our hard work and dedication.”
Garman has enjoyed her finest season for the Bulldogs. Suffering through an injury-plagued first three seasons in Athens, Garman has been injury free this season and a staple of the Georgia back line for much of the season. Garman has started 13 of the 14 games she has played in this year and is providing the kind of spark Baker knew she could.
“Kristin has been through a number of injury setbacks during her career at the University of Georgia and to have logged 180 minutes in these past two games, and to play at such high level, was great to see,” Baker said. “She served a very nice ball to Ashley Miller for the eventual game-winning assist against Kentucky. Kristin is playing like a senior and understands we can still accomplish a number of positive things this year.”
“It's been really great to turn our momentum in the right direction with two wins this past weekend,” Garman said. “Our energy and determination were key to our success. We just need to continue to work hard, get better and play together in order to stay on the right track.”
The Bulldogs look to extend their two-game winning streak this weekend when they travel to Mississippi State Friday and Ole Miss Sunday.
