Georgia Soccer Wins At Mercer, 1-0

September 23, 2007 | Soccer

MACON, Ga. --- The University of Georgia soccer team (7-1) defeated Mercer (2-3-1) Sunday afternoon in Macon, Ga. by a score of 1-0. The game-winner was scored by sophomore forward Olivia West (Westerville, Ohio) with just over a minute remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs are off to their best start since the 1999 season when the squad went 7-0-1 through its first eight games.

“"Unfortunately today showed a repeat performance of Thursday night,”" said Georgia head coach Patrick Baker. "“We managed to score a timely goal, keep another shutout and come away injury free. Across the board we need to be better in the back, more sophisticated in the midfield and more dynamic up top if we have any hopes of winning a game in the SEC. I commend Lindsay Stein for creating the scoring chance we were looking for and Olivia West for slotting the eventual game winning goal. Additionally, Megan Tomlinson, Kelli Corless and Joni Vickers were fantastic in their 90 minutes of play. ”"

After controlling most of the run of play for the first half, Georgia finally broke the scoreless tie as West found the back of the net with 1:15 remaining in the first stanza. Senior midfielder Joni Vickers (Peachtree City, Ga.) took control of the ball in the midfield and found sophomore midfielder Lindsay Stein (Littleton, Colo.) making a run to the left side of the penalty box. Stein fought off her defender and played the ball across the face of the goal to West, who buried it for her first goal of the year.

The second half saw more of the same as Georgia controlled play and kept most of the game in the Mercer half of the field. The Bulldogs’ best scoring opportunities came off the foot of freshman midfielder Traci Dreesen (Lakewood, Colo) who blasted a left-footed shot from just outside the penalty box that was saved over the bar by Mercer goalkeeper Jean Worts. The Dogs had another opportunity to widen their advantage with approx. 10 minutes left, when freshman midfielder Katie Boydston (Atlanta, Ga.) worked her way into the penalty box, battled a defender and came away with it. She then played a cross to sophomore forward Katie Jacobsen (Peachtree City, Ga.), who’s volley attempt went wide of the goal.

The Bulldogs outshot the Bears 11-6 overall, putting five attempts on goal to Mercer’s two. Georgia took 11 corner kicks while holding Mercer without an attempt from the corner and fouls were even at six apiece. Georgia’s sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Betos (Flushing, N.Y.) made two saves on the game while Worts made two.

At the conclusion of non-conference play, Georgia finds itself off to its best start since 1999 when the team began 7-0-1. The Bulldogs open up SEC play in Athens Friday evening with a 7 p.m. matchup against nationally ranked Florida.
