Georgia Soccer Heads To Mercer Sunday
September 22, 2007 | Soccer
Georgia is coming off of a 1-0 win over Georgia State Thursday, while Mercer enters the game following a 3-1 loss to Davidson on Sept. 16.
The Bulldogs and Bears have met five times in the past, with Georgia coming out victorious in each match. In their last meeting, UGA defeated Mercer by a 5-0 score in Athens in 2006.
Georgia looks to pull its road record back to 1-1, falling in its only away contest thus far in a 1-0 decision at No. 17 Southern California. Georgia is 5-0 at home on the year and 1-0 in neutral-site contests.
The Bulldog scoring attack is led by sophomore Carrie Patterson (Atlanta, Ga.), the 2006 SEC Freshman of the Year and a 2007 Preseason All-SEC selection, whose goal against Georgia State proved to be her second game-winner of the year and her fourth tally of the season. She has also recorded three assists, totaling 11 points on the year. She is trailed closely by freshman Caroline Simpson (Atlanta, Ga.), whose four season goals include a hat-trick against Wisconsin. She has added two helpers as well for a total of 10 points.
Georgia is currently receiving votes in three national polls and is ranked No. 5 in the Southeast Region.
Georgia’s first SEC contest of the year will be played Friday, Sept. 28 against nationally-ranked Florida at the UGA Soccer Complex in Athens. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. That match will be followed by a 2 p.m. contest Sunday against South Carolina.
