UGA Women's Tennis Team Opens Fall Tournament Play Friday

ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia women’s tennis team is set to open its fall tournament season Friday with four members competing in Tennessee and a pair heading to Mississippi.
Senior Kelley Hyndman, sophomore Yvette Hyndman, sophomore Adrienne Elsberry, and freshman Cameron Ellis will play singles and doubles at the St. Mary’s Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn., while junior Monika Dancevic and sophomore Naoko Ueshima will head to Oxford, Miss., for the Ole Miss Invitational.
“It’s always fun to compete in the fall, it signals a new year, a new season has started,” said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. “The players like to get out on the court and compete and see what they need to do get better so they are ready when the team portion of the schedule starts in January. “
Dancevic is the highest ranked Bulldog in singles at No. 22 while Yvette Hyndman is No. 51 and Kelley Hyndman is No. 125. Last year, Dancevic posted a 25-8 singles record while Yvette Hyndman went 29-11 and Kelley Hyndman went 23-11.
In Knoxville, the Hyndman sisters, preseason ranked 19th nationally, will pair up as one doubles team while the other duo will be Elsberry and Ellis. At the Ole Miss Invitational, Ueshima and Dancevic, preseason ranked 49th, will play together. These will be new doubles tandems for the Bulldogs.
The field in Oxford includes players from the host Rebels, Mississippi State as well as Arkansas State, Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis, South Alabama, Southern Illinois, Southern Mississippi and Troy. The field in Knoxville features participants from the Lady Vols, N.C. State, Purdue, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Middle Tennessee State, East Tennessee State, Louisville and Wake Forest.
Georgia compiled a 24-2 mark last season, won the SEC title and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships. The team has five players returning including SEC Freshman of the Year Yvette Hyndman. Ellis is the lone newcomer. A graduate of Walton High School in Marietta, she was nationally ranked as high as No. 40 in the 2007 USTA Girls 18s including No. 2 in the Southern Section and No. 1 in Georgia. Ellis won a pair of Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Circuit regional events this past July.
“Cameron had a great summer, and she has come in and practiced hard like all of her teammates,” Wallace added. “She is looking forward to making her collegiate debut, and we’re fired up to see how everybody does in their first fall event.”
The fall tournament season runs through early November. Georgia will play host to the ITA South Regional at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex from Oct. 20-23. The first team dual match will be Jan. 25 in Athens against East Tennessee State.
