Gym Dogs Honored For Academic Achievement

August 15, 2007 | Gymnastics

ATHENS, Ga. --- Ten members of the three-time defending NCAA Champion Georgia gymnastics team were recognized as part of this year’s National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches’ Academic Team.

Included in that list are Audrey Bowers, Adrienne Dishman, Kelsey Ericksen, Christi Fortunato, Katie Heenan, Lauren Johnson, Courtney Kupets, Marcia Newby, Lauren Sessler and Grace Taylor. All ten of these student-athletes received grade point averages of 3.50 or better in the last academic year. This marks the 11th time since 1984 that Georgia has placed three or more gymnasts on the team.

This award follows several scholarly achievements the Gym Dogs reached this past school year, including highest team GPA on campus. In addition, nine gymnasts were named to the Southeastern Conference’s Academic Honor Roll, while five freshmen were named to the league’s All-Freshman Academic Honor Roll.

Kupets, one of four Gym Dogs along with Katie Heenan, Marcia Newby and Grace Taylor to receive 4.0 GPAs for the spring semester, also was recognized as a member of ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-America women’s at-large team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Additionally, 10 Gym Dogs recently completed summer school with seven receiving perfect 4.0 GPAs.
