August 01, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Isner recorded 18 aces in the match and only double-faulted once. Henman logged 16 aces of his own but double-faulted five times, with his most crucial error coming in the tiebreaker. Facing match point for Isner, Henman double-faulted to give the former Bulldog a 7-4 win in the tiebreak the three-set first-round victory.
Henman is a former top-10 ranked player in the world and Wimbledon finalist. Becker, Isner’s second-round opponent, a former member of the Baylor Bears, was a three-time All-American and led BU to the 2004 NCAA Championship.
Isner also played doubles in the event, teaming with Somdev Devvarman of Virginia, who defeated Isner in the NCAA Singles Championship match in Athens last May. The duo faced the event’s No. 2-seeded Martin Damm and Leander Paes and took the match to three sets, but eventually fell by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 8-10.
The Legg Mason Tennis Classic is Isner’s biggest pro tournament to date, boasting a $600,000 purse. The tournament’s No. 1 seed is Andy Roddick, the No. 5-ranked player in the world. The event is being played at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center on hard courts.
