MOSCOW, Russia -- The USA U21 Women's Basketball Team overcame a16-point deficit to defeat Australia, 90-88, in its opening game at the 2007 FIBA U21 World Championship here on Friday morning.

Georgia's Ashley Houts, the 2007 SEC Freshman of the Year and the only rising sophomore named to the U.S. squad, saw one minute of action in the victory. Stanford's Cadice Wiggins and Maryland's Crystal Langhorne led the Americans, scoring 30 and 24 points, respectively.

"There was a lack of readiness on our team's part," said USA U21 National Team and Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie. "You're excited to play, but being excited doesn't mean you're ready to play."

Australia built a 16-point lead eight minutes into the contest and the American never led until the waning moments.

Australia led 85-80 with 2:51 remaining before Wiggins scored five points in a 7-0 run as the Americans finally grabbed an 87-85 lead at the 1:26 mark.

The U.S. team will return to action on Saturday to face Brazil, which dropped a double-overtime decision to Spain in its opening game on Friday.
