Rhoden, Canadians Fall To Czech Republic

Bratislava, Slovakia The Czech Republic outscored Canada 23-6 in the fourth quarter to rally to a 67-60 victory in the final game of preliminary pool play competiton at the FIBA U19 World Championships on Saturday. Georgia’s Jaleesa Rhoden picked up a steal in five minutes of playing time for the Canadians.

Canada opened up a 20-11 lead following the first quarter and led by double-digits through much of the second and third periods. The Canadians owned a 50-36 advantage with 4:00 left in the third quarter. The Czechs knotted the score at 56-56 with 5:12 left in the game and continued their surge through the final buzzer.

Canada finished three games in Group C with a 1-2 record to advance as the No. 3 seed from that quartet. The Canadians will now face the top three teams from Group D, with the combined results of their six games utilized to determine progression into the quarterfinals or classification rounds. Canada will play Australia on Monday, Brazil on Tuesday and Sweden on Wednesday.
