July 21, 2007 | Women's Basketball
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil --- Georgia’s Tasha Humphrey was forced to decline invitations to try out for U.S. National Team over the past three summers due to injuries. On Friday, Humphrey finally donned the Red, White and Blue and quickly made up for lost time.
Humphrey, a three-time All-American for the Lady Bulldogs, exploded for 10 points in less than five minutes of the U.S. National Team’s opening game at the Pan American Games, helping the Americans stake a 17-4 lead en route to a 95-41 victory.
Humphrey eventually finished with 14 points by hitting 6-of-8 shots from the floor, including a 2-of-3 effort from three-point range. She also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and collected a steal in just 16 minutes of playing time.
Humphrey scored the game’s first five points in just over a minute by canning a jumper in the lane at the 9:26 mark of the first quarter and following a three-pointer 30 seconds later. She hit another three with 7:00 left in the period and connected on another shot from inside the paint with 5:17 remaining.
The Americans expanded their lead to 63-23 at halftime and never looked back.
Matee Ajavon finished with 15 points, while Angel McCoughtery chipped in 12, Charde Houston and Candace Wiggins added 10.
In other Group B action, Cuba, the defending Pan Am champion, defeated Argentina, 81-79, in overtime. The U.S. will face the Argentineans on Saturday and Cuba on Sunday.
