July 16, 2007 | Soccer
Georgia begins the 2007 campaign Aug. 31 as the team hosts the Nike Invitational Challenge in Athens. This will be a four-team tournament featuring Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and Georgia. The Bulldogs will face Texas Tech on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. match against Wisconsin on Sunday, Sept. 2. There will also be two other games played as part of the tournament: Vanderbilt vs. Wisconsin (Aug. 31) and Vanderbilt vs. Texas Tech (Sept. 2). Georgia won the last Nike event it participated in, capturing the Virginia Nike Classic in 2006 as freshman Carrie Patterson earned Tournament MVP honors.
The Bulldogs then host two more home games as UNC-Charlotte visits Athens Sept. 6 for a 1 p.m. game and South Florida comes to the Classic City for a 1 p.m. matchup Sept. 9. Georgia will then head to California for the USC Tournament where the squad will take on Southern Cal and Nebraska.
Georgia will return home Thursday, September 20, to take on Georgia State at 8 p.m. in Athens for a regionally televised game on Fox Soccer Channel.
After its last non-conference tilt, a Sept. 25 road game at Mercer, Georgia opens its SEC schedule Friday, Sept. 28 against Florida in Athens. That game is slated for 7 p.m. The Bulldogs will then host South Carolina at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30.
Georgia then hits the road for a four-game road stretch, playing at Arkansas (Oct. 5), LSU (Oct. 7), Vanderbilt (Oct. 12) and Kentucky (Oct. 14). The team then finishes out the season playing four of its last five games at home: Mississippi State (Oct. 19), Ole Miss (Oct. 21), Alabama (Oct. 28) and Tennessee (Nov. 2).
The Bulldogs will take on six teams that were invited to compete in the 2006 NCAA Tournament: Clemson (quarterfinalist), Tennessee (Rd. of 16), Florida (Rd. of 16), Kentucky (first round), Southern Cal (first round) and Vanderbilt (first round). The 2007 NCAA Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 16-Dec. 9 with the College Cup being played at College Station, Texas, Dec. 7-9.
