2007 Football Outlook

May 31, 2007 | Football

The roller-coaster ride that was the 2006 season for the Georgia football team ended on a positive note with three straight wins against ranked teams, including a victory in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Now as the Bulldogs embark on the start of the 2007 campaign, they are hopeful of continuing that momentum.
“We know we were very close to being an 11-2 club, but we were also close to having a losing record,” said Georgia coach Mark Richt, whose squad finished 9-4. “When you look back on some of our championship years, maybe two or three or four games were decided by a touchdown or less. If you win those, you’re in the championship game. But if you lose, you’re at risk of a six- or seven-win season. (The 2006 season) was not a whole lot different from the other years. We just didn’t win some of the close ones.”

Georgia began 2006 with four straight wins, then dropped four of its next six. However, the Bulldogs righted the ship to top No. 5 Auburn, No. 16 Georgia Tech and No. 14 Virginia Tech in successive games to end the year. According to Richt, the Bulldogs learned a valuable lesson during the four losses.
“It was such a tough time when we did lose those games and turned the ball over so much, but it was a time that helped us grow and gave us more confidence in each other,” Richt said. “The slogan Finish The Drill’ maybe means more now than it has.”

Richt said he is looking forward to evaluating the 2007 Bulldogs during preseason workouts.

“We’ll have an infusion with some outstanding players who redshirted that will play a lot on scrimmage downs and special teams,” Richt said. “There will definitely be a lot of young talented guys rolling into playing time, and that’s pretty exciting. I think the biggest question for us will be the offensive line. If that comes together, I think we’ve got a good chance to be good in other positions offensively. Defensively, we have some depth and guys who redshirted and some junior college guys who will help us. We’ll have a chance.”

QUARTERBACKS: The Bulldogs will charge into the season with their quarterback position in experienced, capable hands.
Matthew Stafford (6-3, 237, So.) was the only Georgia quarterback to see action in all 13 games a year ago. Starting eight games, including the last six, Stafford completed 135 passes for 1,749 yards and seven touchdowns. He capped his year by earning Offensive MVP honors at the Chick-fil-A Bowl and picking up Freshman All-SEC recognition.
Joe Cox (6-1, 210, RSo.) played in four games, including one start, and completed 17 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. His importance to the team was put on display as he fired two fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally Georgia past Colorado.
Georgia also has Blake Barnes (6-3, 230, Jr.) back in the fold. Barnes did not see any action in 2006, but he gained valuable seasoning as a reserve in 2005. The Bulldogs additionally return Jonathan deLaureal (6-2, 213, RFr.).

RUNNING BACKS
: The Bulldogs have a deep stable of tailbacks as well as experience at fullback entering the fall.
At tailback, Georgia has 2006 leading rusher Kregg Lumpkin (6-1, 229, Sr.) and 2005 leader Thomas Brown (5-8, 200, Sr.) back. Lumpkin rushed for 798 yards and six touchdowns last year, while Brown had 256 yards and a score before going down with a knee injury. Knowshon Moreno (5-11, 207, RFr.), who has impressed the coaches with his toughness and who scored two touchdowns in the G-Day Game, will enter the mix after redshirting. Georgia also returns versatile Jason Johnson (5-9, 203, Sr.) and the coaches will take a look at Corry Parker (6-0, 205, RFr.).
The Bulldogs are bolstered by the return of Brannan Southerland (6-0, 240, Jr.) at fullback. Southerland was Georgia’s leading scorer in 2006 with 10 touchdowns and he was a valuable receiver out of the backfield, averaging 11.2 yards per catch. Georgia also has Shaun Chapas (6-2, 227, RFr.) and Fred Munzenmaier (6-2, 243, RFr.).

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN: There will be new faces along the line, including the man coaching the players. Former LSU assistant Stacy Searels joined the Georgia staff after Neil Callaway departed to take the head coaching job at UAB job. For Searels, the challenge is to meld veterans, transfers and rookies into a cohesive unit, a task that began in the spring and will continue in fall camp.
The Bulldogs will count on veteran leadership from two returning starters in new roles center Fernando Velasco (6-4, 328, Sr.) and right tackle Chester Adams (6-4, 330, Sr.). With each at guard last season, they helped the Bulldogs accumulate 312 yards of total offense per game in 2006.
Also at center, the Bulldogs have Kevin Perez (6-3, 274, RFr.) and Ian Smith (6-3, 295, RSo.). Backing up Adams will be Justin Anderson (6-5, 335, Fr.). At the other tackle position, the Bulldogs have Trinton Sturdivant (6-5, 286, Fr.) and Vince Vance (6-8, 330, So.).
At the left guard slot, the Bulldogs will open camp with Chris Davis (6-4, 292, RFr.) atop the depth chart. He will be backed up by Tanner Strickland (6-5, 318, Fr.) and Alex Speight (6-1, 286, RFr.). Scott Haverkamp (6-4, 310, Jr.), Josh Davis (6-6, 293, RFr.) and Micky White (6-3, 320, RFr.) will compete at right guard.

TIGHT ENDS: This traditionally has been one of the stronger aspects of the Georgia offense, and even with the departure of 2006 leading receiver and NFL draft choice Martrez Milner, the Bulldogs still have talented performers.
Tripp Chandler (6-6, 259, Jr.) saw action in all 13 games in 2006, catching two passes for 37 yards and one touchdown. Veteran Coleman Watson (6-6, 253, Sr.) is back and his one reception went for a score a year ago. NaDerris Ward (6-5, 255, RFr.) will enter the mix after a redshirt season. The Bulldogs also will take a look at Mitchell Lane (6-5, 221, RFr.), Casey Nickels (6-4, 246, RFr.) and Jeff Potterbaum (6-4, 223, RSo).

WIDE RECEIVERS: Georgia’s receiving corps is perhaps as deep as it’s been in the Richt era, plus the Bulldogs will get back two who missed 2006 due to injuries.
Mohamed Massaquoi (6-2, 198, Jr.) followed Milner in the stats column with 30 grabs for 366 yards and two touchdowns, including the memorable game-winner against Georgia Tech. Kenneth Harris (6-3, 205, Jr.) hauled in 15 passes for 305 yards, followed by A.J. Bryant (6-2, 200, Sr.) with 14 for 251, Demiko Goodman (6-2, 190, Jr.) with 13 for 187, Kris Durham (6-5, 193, So.) with eight for 82 (not to mention two touchdown grabs in the G-Day Game), Mikey Henderson (5-10, 150, Sr.) with seven for 44 and Michael Moore (6-2, 191, RSo.) with two for 36.
In addition, Sean Bailey (6-1, 174, Sr.) will return to action after rehabilitating a knee injury last year. In 2005, Bailey had 16 catches for 364 yards and four touchdowns, including two in the SEC Championship Game. T.J. Gartrell (6-1, 183, Sr.) is also working his way back from an injury.
Also at receiver, Georgia has Tony Wilson (5-11, 198, RFr.), Vernon Spellman (6-1, 184, RSo.) and Percy Croffie (6-0, 162, Sr).

DEFENSIVE ENDS
: The Bulldogs said goodbye to sack leaders and NFL draft choices Charles Johnson and Quentin Moses, so filling those spots may be the most pressing issue on defense.
Entering preseason camp, Roderick Battle (6-4, 256, RSo.) and Marcus Howard (6-2, 220, Sr.) are the leading candidates to take over the starting slots. Battle had two sacks and Howard recorded 13 tackles in reserve roles last year. Backing up Howard will be Jeremy Lomax (6-4, 222, Jr.), Michael Lemon (6-4, 260, RFr.) and Wes Jacobs (6-2, 250, RSo.). Lomax had a sack among his five tackles a year ago. On the other side, the Bulldogs will take a look at Demarcus Dobbs (6-2, 263, RFr.), Kiante Tripp (6-6, 272, RFr.), Jarius Wynn (6-5, 275, Jr.) and Andrew Gully (6-4, 270, RSo.).

DEFENSIVE TACKLES:
Even though regulars Ray Gant and Dale Dixson completed their eligibility in 2006, the reins have been handed to players with potential to continue the tradition of excellence inside.
At one tackle slot, Jeff Owens (6-3, 292, Jr.) is the anchor as he made 26 tackles and had a sack in 2006. Georgia also has Tripp Taylor (6-1, 258, So.), Corvey Irvin (6-4, 286, Jr.) and Justin Lyles (6-2, 289, Sr.). Taylor doubles as the Bulldogs’ “wham back” on short-yardage situations on offense.
Geno Atkins (6-1, 275, So.) had nine tackles in limited action a year ago, but he made strides in the spring to move to the top of the depth chart at one tackle slot. Kade Weston (6-5, 315, RSo.) earned Freshman All-America and Freshman All-SEC honors a year ago after recording 13 tackles. The Bulldogs also have Ricardo Crawford (6-1, 297, RFr.) and converted end Brandon Wood (6-1, 275, RFr.).

LINEBACKERS: The Bulldogs lost experience and firepower at linebacker with the graduation of Tony Taylor (96 tackles), Jarvis Jackson (71) and Danny Verdun Wheeler (37) as they ranked first, second and eighth in tackles on the team in 2006. Heading into fall camp, the Bulldogs boast experience but youth here.
At the Mike position, Brandon Miller (6-4, 257, Sr.) is the leading returning tackler among the linebackers after making 23 stops. Marcus Washington (6-0, 245, Jr.), special teams ace Benjamin Boyd (6-1, 210, Jr.), Chris Gaunder (6-0, 220, Sr.) and Will Sullivan (6-1, 215, RFr.) also will get work.
Dannell Ellerbe (6-1, 232, Jr.) leads the candidates at the Will position. He recorded seven tackles a year ago. Also there are Darryl Gamble (6-2, 240, RFr.), Tommy Watkins (6-1, 210, RSo.) and Patrick Williams (6-1, 222, Sr.).
At Sam linebacker, the Bulldogs have Darius Dewberry (6-3, 230, So.), Akeem Dent (6-2, 218, RFr.), Mitchell Pittman (6-2, 210, Jr.) and Justin Fields (6-1, 244, RFr.). Dewberry had six tackles in 2006 as a reserve and he saw action on special teams.

DEFENSIVE BACKS:
This area appears to be a strength for the Bulldogs heading into 2007, led by senior Kelin Johnson at strong safety.
Johnson (6-1, 194, Sr.) is Georgia’s leading returning tackler after he made 60 a year ago. The hard-hitting safety also had 2.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He will be backed up by Quintin Banks (6-2, 197, RFr.), Antavious Coates (6-4, 211, RSo.) and Andrew Johnson (6-0, 195, RFr.).

One corner slot includes Asher Allen (5-10, 192, So.), Thomas Flowers (5-10, 186, Sr.) and Donavon Baldwin (6-2, 190, RSo.). Allen had 24 stops a year ago.
The other corner position features Bryan Evans (5-11, 179, RSo.), Prince Miller (5-8, 182, So.), Ramarcus Brown (5-11, 165, Jr.) and Chad Gloer (6-0, 191, RFr.). Evans and Brown combined for 13 starts in 2006. Brown recorded 39 tackles, Evans had 26 tackles and a sack, and Miller added 10 stops.
At free safety, C.J. Byrd (6-2, 190, Jr.) enters the fall atop the depth chart. He will be backed up by Reshad Jones (6-2, 194, RFr.) and special teams standouts Andrew Williams (6-0, 197, Sr.) and Rowdy Francis (5-10, 201, Jr.). Byrd had eight tackles as a reserve in 2006, while Baldwin had four. Jones picked off a pass in the G-Day Game.

SPECIALISTS: Georgia is a school known for its strength in special teams and the 2007 season should continue the trend.
Kicker Brandon Coutu (6-0, 200, Sr.) missed much of last season with an injury, but he still ranked second on the team with 47 points as he converted 10-of-11 field goals and 17-of-17 extra points. When Coutu was out, the Bulldogs were able to turn to Andy Bailey (6-2, 223, Sr.), who was 5-for-8 on field goals and 12-of-14 on PATs. Georgia also still has the services of kickoff specialist Ben Wilson (6-0, 204, Jr.).

Brian Mimbs (5-11, 205, Jr.) is the frontrunner to replace four-year punter Gordon Ely-Kelso. Mimbs and Francis will get a look at holder. Jeff Henson (6-3, 254, Sr.) returns as the snapper and will be backed up by Bo Fowler (6-2, 220, Jr.) and Josh Willis (6-1, 231, RFr.).

The Bulldogs remain dangerous with Henderson, Flowers and Allen on punt returns. Allen, Moreno and Jones will lead the way on kickoff returns. Henderson had 25 punt returns for 367 yards, an average of 14.7, and he returned two for touchdowns. Flowers had just two returns before getting hurt, but he averaged 13.7 yards in 2005. Allen averaged 22.1 yards on kickoffs and 13.5 on punt returns.
