Taylor Leon Named National Golfer of the Week

April 23, 2007 | Women's Golf

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia's Taylor Leon was named the National Golfer of the Week by Golfweek Magazine on Monday, a day after she captured the SEC individual championship and also led the Bulldogs to the team title at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.

Leon, a sophomore from Dallas, Texas, carded rounds of 69-72-67 to finish at 8-under 208, four shots ahead of teammate Garrett Phillips and Tennessee's Marci Turner, who tied for second. That score also was a stroke shy of the SEC Championship record. In addition, Leon's 67 in the final round was her best loop in two seasons at Georgia.

The No. 3-ranked Bulldogs led wire-to-wire in winning their league-leading 11th SEC Championship in women's golf. Georgia took a
six-shot lead after the first round with a 3-under 285 and then extended that margin to eight shots following the second round and eventually won by 16 over a field which include five top-10 and nine top-30 teams.

Leon has now posted six top-10 finishes in the seven stroke play events she has completed during the 2006-07 season and also went 3-0-1 for Georgia at the NGCA Match Play Championship last fall.

With the SEC win, Leon vaulted from No. 13 to No. 6 in the latest edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Four Bulldogs are now ranked among the nation's top 50 golfers with Whitney Wade at No. 32, Garrett Phillips at No. 43 and Alina Lee at No. 49.

The Bulldogs return to action with NCAA Regional play on May 10-12. Georgia will compete in either Baton Rouge, La.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; or St. George, Utah. The top eight teams for each Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 22-25 at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
