March 06, 2007 | Swimming & Diving

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Former Georgia swimmer Robert Margalis broke the American record in the 1,000-yard freestyle this past weekend at the Florida Swimming Senior Championship with a time of 8:42.64.

Margalis, who swam for Georgia from 2002-05, is a three-time U.S. National Champion and 2003 Pan American Games Gold Medalist. He has held a spot on the U.S. World Championship Team for three years.

“I felt very confident during the swim,” said Margalis. “I went out hard and kept up a strong pace. I am very happy with my swim, especially since I don’t swim the 1,000 often.”

Margalis broke the record of 8:44.11 set by Chris Thompson in 2001.
