Bulldogs Regroup in Preparation for Alabama
March 24, 2007 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. --- The top-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team looks to recover from its first loss of the season when it plays host to No. 61 Alabama on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Georgia dropped a disappointing 4-3 contest at Auburn on Friday after winning its first 12 matches of the year and earning the nation’s No. 1 ranking. The Bulldogs’ record stands at 12-1 (4-1 Southeastern Conference) when Alabama (5-9, 1-4 SEC) comes to town.
“As I’ve told the team all year, you have to go out there ready to play every match or anyone can beat you as we saw against Auburn,” Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. “Alabama’s going to come in here hoping we’re down after a disappointing loss, and we better be ready for them."Alabama is coming off a 7-0 loss to Tennessee at home Friday. The Crimson Tide are on a four-match losing skid and have lost six of their last seven matches. This is the 31st meeting between the two teams. The Bulldogs lead the series, 29-1, with Alabama’s lone win coming in 1977.
Georgia freshman Yvette Hyndman won her singles match at Auburn and still is yet to lose a singles dual match this year. She is 13-0 in dual action and 24-7 overall to lead the team in wins.
The Bulldogs still control their own destiny in the SEC with six conference matches remaining, including contests next weekend against Kentucky and Vanderbilt which both have not lost an SEC match yet.
"We still have every opportunity to win a conference championship, and that’s our goal right now,” Wallace said. “The opportunity is there for us, we just have to continue to work hard and do the things we’re capable of."
