Top-Ranked Georgia Rolls Past Buccaneers, 7-0
March 14, 2007 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – The top-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team rolled past East Tennessee State on Wednesday, sweeping the Buccaneers, 7-0, in their first time taking the court as the nation’s new No. 1 team.
“We did just what we had to do to win the match today,” Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. “I wasn’t overly impressed with any one area, but I felt we did what we had to do to win the match, and I was glad to get another win. But we have a lot of work to do as a team, and that’s where our mind has to stay.”
The Bulldogs improved to 12-0 with the win while the Buccaneers fell to 6-8. Georgia also finished its scheduled matches with non-conference opponents a perfect 8-0. Seven of those matches were won with 7-0 or 6-1 decisions.
“We’ve had a lot of good non-conference teams on our schedule, and it’s very exciting to go undefeated against them,” Wallace commented.
The Bulldogs maintained their excellent doubles play against ETSU, sweeping all three courts. It was their 11th time winning doubles in 12 matches and their seventh time sweeping the early point.
Monika Danevic cruised to a quick straight-sets victory over Masha Ilina on court two to improve her impressive winning streak to 15 matches. The sophomore still is yet to lose a singles match since Nov. 3 in the SEC Coaches Classic.
Lara Fakhoury also recorded a straight-sets win over Vita Moskaliova on court six to bring the freshman’s overall record to 12-5 and bring Georgia within one point of clinching the match.
Natalie Frazier pulled ahead next on court one, defeating Yevgeniya Stupak, 6-3, 6-1, to clinch the Bulldogs’ 12th win of the year. It was the third match the senior has clinched this season, tying her with Dancevic for the most on the team.
The Bulldogs cleaned up on the Nos. 3-5 courts as well, including another comeback by freshman Yvette Hyndman. For the third straight match, the 60th-ranked freshman dropped her first set and had to claim two more for victory. The reigning Southeastern Conference Player of the Week did just that against Olya Batsula on Wednesday.
Hyndman still is perfect in dual matches, the only Bulldog to play singles and doubles in all 12 matches with records of 12-0 and 9-3, respectively. She leads the team in overall wins as well with 23.
Freshman Adrienne Elsberry, who also had to climb out from a first-set deficit, defeated Elena Volobueva on court five. The Athens native now has played in three dual matches and won every one to improve her overall record to 15-4. Kelley Hyndman rebounded from her two losses this past weekend for a win on court four over Tara Byrne as well.
Georgia takes a break from action until traveling to Auburn on Friday, March 23. The Bulldogs’ next home match is Sunday, March 25 against Alabama.
