Alina Lee Named SEC Golfer Of The Week
March 01, 2007 | Women's Golf
Athens, Ga. --- Georgia sophomore Alina Lee was named the co-SEC Golfer of the Week on Thursday by the league office in Birmingham after she was co-medalist at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic last weekend.
Lee carded rounds of 72-72-73 to finish at 1-over 217 and in a five-way tie for the individual title. The victory also represented the first top-10 finish of Lee's collegiate career and improved her career-best 54-hole tally by three strokes. Lee now has posted six top-20 performances in 14 tourneys at UGA.
By shooting even-par 72s on Friday and Saturday, Lee recorded her third and fourth straight par-or-better efforts dating back to the final two rounds of the Stanford Intercollegiate in the fall.
Lee, who is 16 years old, is believed to be the youngest collegiate medalist in women's golf history. She shared the SEC honor with Auburn's Mariana Macias, who also tied for the individual title in Puerto Rico.
Despite tying for second in Puerto Rico, the Bulldogs remained atop the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index rankings this week. Georgia will return to action on Monday when it competes in the UCF Challenge at the Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Fla.
