Bulldog Invitational Is On Tap For This Weekend

February 16, 2007 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – The Georgia swimming and diving teams this weekend will host the Bulldog Invitational, a last chance meet for individuals to qualify or improve their standings for the upcoming NCAA Championships.

The Bulldog Invitational will take place Saturday and Sunday, with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. each day and the finals beginning at 5 p.m. each day. Admission to the meet at the Gabrielsen Natatorium is free.

No team scoring will be held, but individuals can use the meet to qualify automatically for the NCAAs or improve their chances of making the field. NCAA Zone Diving will take place March 2-4, including the Zone B Championship in Athens, and divers must qualify for the zones before they can advance to the NCAAs. The NCAAs for the women will be held March 8-10 and the men’s championship will be March 15-17, both in Minneapolis, Minn.

Joining Georgia’s teams at this weekend’s meet will be several squads, including Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina and LSU.

“We want to see if some of our kids can swim for some better times,” Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. “This is going to be a really competitive last chance meet. It won’t quite be the level of competition as the SEC Championship, but it won’t be far below it.”

SEC Female Swimmer of the Year Kara Lynn Joyce leads the Lady Bulldogs’ contingent charging toward the NCAAs. She already has made the NCAA automatic qualifying standards (A cuts) in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles. Georgia also has A cuts from Anne-Marie Botek (50 free and 100 butterfly), Jessica Cole (100 and 200 free), Claire Maust (200 and 500 free), Anna Miller (200 and 500 free) and Aleksandra Putra (100 and 200 backstroke), as well as all five relays. Emily Hunter has qualified for the Zone B Championship on all three diving levels, while Natalie Thomas has qualified on 3-meter.

On the men’s side, SEC Male Swimmer of the Year Sebastien Rouault has A cuts in the 500 and 1,650 freestyles. The Bulldogs also have A cuts from Neil Versfeld in the 200 breaststroke, Gil Stovall in the 200 butterfly and Nathan Bibliowicz in the 200 individual medley. Divers Genya Gouzeev and Webb Worthington have qualified for Zone B on both springboards.

Both Georgia teams have several competitors with NCAA provisional qualifying standards (B cuts). If they are unable to make A cuts this weekend, they can still advance to the NCAAs if all of the spots in an event aren’t filled.
