How Are the Judges Chosen?
February 14, 2007 | Gymnastics
Steve from Kansas City, Mo. asks...
How are the judges chosen? Do you know ahead of time what judges will be on what rotation? Do you get the same judge for different meets? Do you as a coach have any influence on who will or will not judge your meet?
Steve
The judges for all college meets are assigned by a Regional Assigner. The coaches have NO say so in who is assigned. There is a rule that a judge cannot be assigned to judge a team at home more than twice so you will see a lot of different faces throughout the year.
There are a lot of judges assigned who I know and have known because of my 30 years in coaching. There are also a lot of new faces this year. It is mixed up a great deal. The judges come from all over the country and most of time we do not have a Georgia judge on our meets.
The meet assignments and the event assignments are posted on the internet for everyone to see. I can go online and look up who judged Utah last Friday night. That adds a lot of credibility to a score. For example, this past weekend when Courtney Kupets earned her perfect ten, the two judges were Brevet officials who have been judging for over 20 years. They have a ton of experience at the highest levels. I am sure when the gymnastics community saw Courtney’s “10”, they went to see who the judges were.
This is a great question……as years ago, I picked the judges…HA
Thanks for your support.
